Clearly there are people inside the organization that are taking notice of Sanu. There appears to be a strong case building for the veteran WR to make the final roster. The notion of Sanu making the final roster had been in question after the 49ers signed Sanu during the 2020 season and he was quickly released.
One of the main topics of discussions this offseason has been surrounding the 49ers WR3 position battle. Early projections have included Richie James Jr, Jalen Hurd, Jauan Jennings, winning the battle.
Sanu now has an oppertunity to win the big slot role with the 49ers. The team didn't select a WR in the draft, only bringing in UDFA Austin Watkins out of UAB. This means there will be an oppertunity for a player to step into immediate production.
My take on Sanu's 2020 stint is this, it was amidst the pandemic and an extremely difficult year for a lot of people. Gyms were closed, family's were staying home together. Sanu was not signed with a team that offseason so he did not have a team structure to fall back on which could easily lend to him to falling out of football shape. I imagine this is why he did not last long with the team back in 2020 and why McDaniels gives a nod to his current shape.
Now, Sanu appears to be in great shape and looks to be motivated to prove that he still has what it takes to be a star in this league.
