Top 5 Thing 49ers' Fans Want To See From OTA's

Brad Graham • May 24, 2022

Football is back and it all begins with OTA's

After months of offseason storylines, the pre-draft process and everything in-between, fans of the 49ers are excited to see some real action taking place in Santa Clara regarding the 2022 San Francisco 49ers football team.

We are going to dive into the top 5 things 49ers fans are looking for as we head into the 2nd day of OTA's, the 1st that is open to the local media and beat reporters.

Here are the top 5 things we will all be on the look-out for:

#5) FOOTBALL

Yes, it's that simple.

Fans will be over the moon just knowing 49ers' football is back, at least momentarily as OTA's kickoff with Mandatory Minicamp around the corner.

In talking with a lot of fans over the past few months, many are on record saying this offseason has felt as if it was the longest 49ers' offseason they have ever been apart of, based on the evolving situation surrounding the 49ers' QB position, constant questioning of the teams future of the franchise for national media, a star player requesting a trade, and the natural discourse across social platforms.

There has been plenty to distract from the actual play on the field which is why we are so excited to see it return for phase III of the offseason program.

Although it may seem trivial, we are all excited to get REAL football back in one of the most contentious offseason's to date. I think I can speak for a lot fans when I say we are thrilled to see 49ers helmets on green grass again.

#4) OTA Veteran & Rookie Standouts

(Image via 49ers.com)

With the understanding that not all players will be in attendance for OTA's as it is voluntary, fans will want to see which veterans and rookies will be standing out during this period.

There should be plenty of opportunity today for some analysis to be shared on this specific point. Although these practices are non-padded and there will be extremely limited contact, fans will still want to know who looks good and who needs some work.

For example, who caught everything thrown to them, who dropped passes that should have been caught, which DB's looked-up the WR's in 1v1 drills, amongst many things to takeaway from OTA's.

We'll also be looking for "fun" content to show more into a players personalities like the clip of Jauan Jennings below:

Not only do fans love to see the play on the field, but they love hearing the stories about how guys like Javon Kinlaw has started a Croc's movement inside the locker room and guys like the Jauan have fully bought in. Bringing insight into who these guys are as people will be something fans will definitely be on the lookout for.

#3) Clarity on the Offensive Line

(Image via 49ers.com)

As we drill down into more football specific things the 49ers' Faithful would like to see, I firmly believe OL clarity will be a huge point of emphasis this offseason, as it has already been.

The 49ers have drafted two offensive lineman in back-to-back drafts and have plenty of holes to fill upfront. With Laken Tomlinson leaving for the Jets in Free Agency, there is now a gaping hole at LG with real questions of who will take-over that spot.

Not only is there a massive hole at LG, the teams RT Mike McGlinchey is returning from severe lower leg injury sustained in the middle of last season. Although all signs point to a full recovery, it is still weighing heavy on fans minds and we likely won't be reassured of the status of McGlichey until training camp.

At risk of burying the lead, fans still don't know what the status of veteran center Alex Mack is, who was pivotal to the success of the 49ers OL in 2021.

It's been reported this morning from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area that Alex Mack is still undecided on his return for the 2022 season. However, that doesn't mean fans still don't want to know who lines up at LG and C in place of Mack and Tomlinson.

Will they kick Brunskill inside, will Jake Brendal take over as the starting center, and is Aaron Banks running out at LG with the first unit?

Although we also recognize All-World LT Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey likely won't be participating, it will be interesting to see who the "OTA Starting 5" is for the 49ers' offensive line. Fans will also want to know how the rookie OL look at first glance.

#2 Practice Footage & Photos

(Image via 49ers.com)

49ers' fans will be flocking to fan sites, beat reporters, and 49ers social's to find anything they can see of the new look 49ers heading into 2022.

I know I can speak for myself that I couldn't be more excited to see what these players look like after being away for an offseason. There have been some exciting changes and new faces added to the roster and fans will be eating up any piece of content they can get their hands on.

The 49ers started dropping content late last night and got things kicked off on the right foot..

Again, it's been an insane offseason so just seeing the boys back out on the field is a jolt of energy the fanbase desperately needs. Seeing the players out there on the field working on their craft is a breathe of fresh air amongst the non-stop talking points from national media pundits.

Fans will want to get more on field video and photos from todays practices as well as hearing from Head Coach Kyle Shanahan at 2pm PST.

#1) QB Trey Lance

Are you shocked to see 49ers' 2nd-year QB Trey Lance holding down the #1 ranking on this list? My guess would be, no.

Trey Lance is seemingly in the headlines every day surrounding the idea if he is "ready" or not to take over the starting QB position for one of the most storied franchises in all of pro sport.

As a result, Trey Lance enters what we believe to be his first full offseason as the 49ers' starting QB. Even though Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the roster, by all reports it is still believed that it is just a matter of time before Garoppolo is either traded or released.

In the meantime, all eyes remain firmly planted on Trey Lance as we get set to kickoff the first portion of the offseason program.

The 49ers traded a large amount of draft capital to obtain the the dynamic signal caller but there are still many of questions surrounding the young QB as he has only played 10 quarters in his young NFL Career.

We know that the team has put an emphasis on retooling his throwing mechanics that dates back to last OTA's. We will want to see if the throwing motion is more compact, does the "bounce-step" still remain at the top of his hitch, and has his accuracy improved, as reports have indicated that it needs work.

Whether we believe any of the above critiques to be true, it's safe to say, all eyes will be on Trey Lance throughout the offseason program as he enters OTA's as the unquestioned starting QB.
