Observations From Today

Jimmy Garoppolo:

Today we didn't see a bunch of Jimmy Garoppolo on the field however we did get a healthy dose of Jimmy Garoppolo the person.

The 49ers made the teams QB available to the media for the first time since selecting Trey Lance in the NFL Draft. One of the big questions surrounding the offseason move for the 49ers was how Jimmy Garoppolo would handle having his future replacement in the building and we got to see that first hand today as he was peppered with questions about Trey Lance.

As we got to see today, at least from an outside perspective, it appears that the presence of Trey Lance has energized Jimmy a bit, in a good way.

This is something that is hard to quantify but it is something you can pick up over time when you watch these players hold press conference after press conference for years.

Jimmy has a tendency to have a nervous energy when discussing with the media. Didn't see much of that today. In fact, he looked as ready as ever to speak and answer the questions thrown his way.

Even his introduction of George Kittle today was like I have never seen from Jimmy:

Weston Richburg Retires

Kyle Shanahan had informed us today that Weston Richburg has officially retired.

This news was to be somewhat expected after Richburg did not return to action at all in 2020. Richburg had been a big part in the 49ers success during the 2019 season but unfortunately injuries will cut his career short. Weston retires at the age of 29.

The 49ers have likely known this for some time as they have prepared for his departure accordingly by bringing in Alex Mack in free agency.

Jeff Wilson Jr. Out 4-6 Months

The first injury of the year has hit and it comes at the cost of the 49ers' 2nd string running back, Jeff Wilson.

Jeff Wilson Jr. was slated to mix in with rookies Trey Sermon and Elijah Mitchell but likely to hold his place on the depth chart behind Mostert. Now, his injury will likely have him missing time into the season based on the timetable and could open the door for another RB to step into his place. Hopefully Wilson can recover and be back on the field to regain his place on the depth chart.

The 49ers go into camp with Mostert, Gallman, Sermon, Mitchell, and Hasty as the teams healthy running backs.
