Alabama's DeVonta Smith Brings Home The Hardware

Brad Graham • January 6, 2021

Move over NFL, there is a new WR in town.

What an absolute shocker!

I would be completely lying to you if thought Alabama wide-out DeVonta Smith would win the Heisman Trophy, as this award is typically reserved for college footballs best QB's.

But that doesn't mean that I don't think DeVonta isn't deserving of this award.

DeVonta Smith put up NCAA '14 video game type numbers in 2020 with 105 receptions for 1,641 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Seriously, I am fresh off of back-to-back BCS Championship runs (Cal - NCAA '14) and even force feeding my #1 WR in that game, these numbers are still hard to reach. Yes, you really just read a player get compared to a video game, like legit compared. You're welcome for the amazing analysis.

DeVonta has been on my radar since last season when I was prepping for the 2020 NFL Draft. I went into the tape searching for Jerry Jeudy or Henry Ruggs to wow me but I came away not caring about either one.

It was DeVonta who I saw as the diamond.

DeVonta Smith will be a superstar in the NFL. He is apart of this new wave of wide-receivers that are good at EVERYTHING. Not good at just some things, EVERYTHING.

Whether it's his contested catch ability, acrobatic catching ability, speed, routes, twitch, he has it. He can kill you in the slot, outside the numbers, redzone, it doesn't matter. I expect him to have a Justin Jefferson level impact if he lands in a good offense with a good QB.

I let my pro-comp for him slip earlier but keep an eye out for another post discussing who I think DeVonta closely resembles.
