49ers Training Camp Recap - Day 1

Brad Graham • July 28, 2021

Players and staff report for training camp.

Although the 49ers' players actually didn't take the field today, there was plenty of news and updates that came out of team headquarters after players have officially reported for training camp.

While the players, staff, and reporters descended on Santa Clara for the first time in quite some time, it didn't change the main topic of discussion surrounding which continues to swirl around the QB position.

Before we take a deep dive into the quotes surrounding Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, let's review some of the player transactions and news that came across today.

Roster Transactions

The team makes a few roster moves:

Signed: DL Anthony Zettle and DL Eddie Yarbrough

Waived: WR Andy Jones

PUP: S Tarvarius Moore and RB Jeff Wilson Jr.

The 49ers' opted to waive a WR from their extremely deep WR room to add depth to the defensive line. John Lynch spoke about Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, and Jalen Hurd in the sense that they will be eased into camp, which makes sense why the team is bringing in two defensive ends.

Both Zettle and Yarbrough will likely be camp bodies to help provide depth with both Bosa and Ford taking it easy heading into camp.

Emmanuel Moseley Heads To Reserve/Covid-19 List

Moseley is coming into this season with a fresh two-year contract but unfortunately the young CB will start the year on the Reserve/Covid-19 list.

Here is what Moseley will have to go through in order to get back on the field fo the 49ers:

Kyle Shanhan and John Lynch Address the Media

Twitter was a buzz today as the Kyle Shanahan laid out a few spicy quotes regarding the QB competition between Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance.

Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Jimmy Garoppolo is the 49ers' "best QB in the building right now, so he’ll start out training camp that way”.

Kyle went on to tell reporters about what he told Jimmy Garoppolo the day they traded up to three and that he should feel secure in competing for the job. Kyle said, “There’s no rookie who’s going to come in here and take your job right away.”

I took some time to breakdown all the quotes from Kyle Shanahan and you can see how to interpret the quotes from today.
