49ers' Raheem Mostert Heads To Long-Term IR; Team Adds Kerryon Johnson, Plus More.

Brad Graham • September 15, 2021

49ers made a decent amount of roster moves today.

                                                                                                 (Recap video of today's news)

The 49ers made a bunch of roster moves today in wake of the news that starting running-back and captain Raheem Mostert will be headed towards season-ending IR after opting for corrective knee surgery.

Mostert took to twitter to and posted a message alerting fans that he was opting for season-ending surgery:

This news is tough to hear as a fan of the 49ers and Raheem Mostert because this news could indicate the end of Mostert's time with the 49ers.

Mostert is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and all signs have already pointed to this being Raheem's last season with the team. The 49ers traded up into the third round of last years NFL draft to select running-back Trey Sermon out of Ohio State as well as selecting RB Elijah Mitchell in the 6th round, who just had a monster game against the Lions.

All signs point to Raheem Mostert having taken his last snap in the 49ers jersey.

49ers Sign Kerryon Johnson

In a corresponding move with the Mostert news, the 49ers signed 24 year-old RB Kerryon Johnson.

Johnson was a former 2nd round pick with the Lions in 2018. Kerryon was a big riser in the draft process after scoring 18 rushing touchdowns in his final season at Auburn. Running for that many touchdowns in the SEC as a 20 year old was extremely impressive, but we have yet to see it translate to the NFL.

A big reason why we haven't seen his dominance in the SEC translate to the NFL is partly due to injuries and the ever-changing coaches and front office staff for the Lions.

Kerryon Johnson compiled 1,225 yards on the ground with 8 TDs in his first three years in the NFL.

Unfortunately, 2020 wasn't a good year for Johnson as he was submarined on the depth chart by veteran Adrian Peterson and his season being cut short in 2020 with a meniscus tear. The Lions decided to move on from Johnson and he landed with the Eagles this off-season but was placed on IR after getting injured again and was subsequently released from IR.

It will be interesting to see if Johnson finds a home here with the 49ers.
