Watch: Trey Lance Gains Ground On A Deep Roster

Recap from today's training camp practice.

(Today's Training Camp Video Breakdown Above)

As we assumed prior to camp, all eyes continue to stay on Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance as they continue to compete in camp.

Today was my first day taking in training camp at the 49ers' practice facilities to see the future franchise QB and the former franchise QB in Jimmy Garoppolo fighting to keep his job.

Based on what I saw today, a much larger conversation could be headed our way if Trey Lance continues to ascend while Jimmy's inconsistent play seemingly is here to stay. This inconsistency can stem back to the 2020 season and you can even pull examples form the 2019 season when Jimmy Garoppolo led the team to a quarter away from being Super Bowl Champions.

I am still seeing 'up and down' Jimmy and he may start feeling additional pressure due to Trey Lance having a much more natural skillset and being able to execute the offense pretty well this early in camp.

One of the main focuses for myself heading into training camp today was the offensive line. I really wanted to understand what the starting unit looked like and if any of the recent rookie draft picks would slide in with the first unit.

I was anticipating the potential of Aaron Banks rotating at RG but that was not the case:

There were also some other position groups that stood out today. When looking at the offensive line unit, it was apparent that the interior defensive line was playing very well.

Javon Kinlaw has been sitting out team periods so it has really given the DL depth an oppertunity to blossom.

The RB room is also another position group that is stacked with a bunch of good players. A lot of them impressed today in camp and showed that the 49ers' may have the most talented RB room since Kyle Shanahan took over in 2017.

For today being my first training camp practice, it was a great measuring stick to see these players in shorts and shirts to be able to see who shows up now that pads come on tomorrow.

When pads come on, we will get a better sense of who stands out and who doesn't. Pads are the great equalizer. I will be back tomorrow to cover training camp again and excited to hear those pads pop again.
