Watch: Rookie RB Trey Sermon Shows Off Skillset During Workout

Brad Graham • June 28, 2021

Trey Sermon is big and fast.

49ers' fans finally get to see a little more of rookie running back Trey Sermon. The 3rd round draft pick has been fairly reserved on social media since being selected by the 49ers out of Ohio State.

Although this above video is short, we do get to see what the combination of size and speed looks like that Sermon possesses.

At 6'0" 215 lbs, you can get an idea of the suddenness he as and ability to break off a route. Sermon might not have the straight line speed that most 'Shanahan RBs' typically possess but that doesn't mean Kyle can't utilize Sermon's skillset to benefit the offense. Sermon clocked at a 4.58 40 time which isn't great from a RBs perspective, but Sermon was hurt for a majority of the offseason so who knows how that may have affected his testing.

I feel that Sermon has the look of a downhill bruiser but the young RB will be implemented in the passing game, unlike typical 'Kyle Shanahan backs'.

Trey Sermon fits the mold of 'do it all' type of back that Shanahan hasn't really had since taking over in 2017 and really signals a shift in player archetype for Kyle, where a player like Elijah Mitchell fits the mold of what we have come to expect in a 'Shanahan RB'.

Raheem Mostert recently talked about the rookie RBs via a radio show per Pro Football Talk.

Mostert talk about how the young rookies are "learning under" Raheem which is a good sign for the young backs. Raheem Mostert is a grizzled veteran at this stage of his career, heading into the final year of his 30's.

With Mostert capable of hitting a home run with any handoff he gets, it will be a great change of pace to get the powerful back in Sermon on the field.

Raheem is running at 5.6 yards a carry over his career which is a very strong average. Combine that with Sermon who averaged 6.5 yards a carry over his career and 7.5 yards a carry after transferring from Oklahoma to Ohio State, the 49ers seems primed to have a potent rushing attack in 2021.
