49ers Bring Back Two Practice Squad Players, Waive LS

Brad Graham • January 6, 2021

The team brings back two promising UDFA rookies.

49ers Chase Harrell
The 49ers make two sneaky moves to help bolster depth heading into next season.

S Jared Mayden - This was someone I identified early into training camp as a guy who could seriously push for a final 53 man roster spot. Due to the depth at the time, the UDFA had just missed out and was added to the practice squad.

'Mayday' Mayden appeared in two games for the 49ers in 2020, making 1 solo tackle and 1 assisted tackle. Hey played primarily on special teams but Mayden was primed for a potentially starting role before being lost for the year due to injury.

Mayden could be a key special teamer for the 49ers in 2021 and it's up to him to push for the starting spot opposite of Jimmie Ward with the likely-hood of Tartt not being retained.

TE Chase Harrell - The UDFA TE out of Arkansas was someone that we noticed early in the year during the infamous 'Tennessee workouts'.

After speaking with multiple trainers, photographers, and former NFL players that were on hand for the workouts, it was clear that Chase stood out from a physical standpoint.

This caused me to dive deeper and I came away really liking what I saw. He was a former WR at Kansas, then transferred to Arkansas where he became a TE. Although he didn't put up many stats, that athletic profile was there.

Harrell was actually training to be a DE during the pre-draft process and he absolutely looked like he could fit the role. (See video below)

Harrell was eventually suspended for PED's in 2020 and never saw the field.

Hopefully he can put that behind him and move forward with a fresh start in 2021. With Ross Dwelley being an restricted free agent, who knows if this impact will be felt in 2021.

Only time will tell.
